Here's how I upgraded over 3 months early...
I went on AT&T's website and opened a chat window and said, "I'd like to upgrade to the Nexus 6 today and pay the 2-year contract price (0). If you can't do this for me then I will be cancelling my contract today." I was told that I could not upgrade early and that I'd have to call 800-331-0500 (or 611 from my phone) and select the options for contract cancellation.
I called and told the woman "I'd like to cancel my contract so that I can switch to T-Mobile." And of course she replied, "I'm sorry to hear that. May I ask why you're switching?" I said, "...because AT&T is too expensive and I want to upgrade to the Nexus 6 and don't want to use AT&T Next." Then without any hassle, she offered to let me upgrade for the 2-year contract price. I went in fully prepared to pay the ETF since I thought for sure they would deny my request so they could stop my grandfathered unlimited data plan. She waived the upgrade fee, applied a discount that I didn't know about, and even sent it overnight FedEx.
I'm sure you XDA experts have had better upgrade experiences, or maybe thought I got a bad deal, but I'm happy, and now hopefully now more people out there can upgrade early, too.
