[Tip] For people having issues with lost recoveries topic

One of my buddies introduced me to an app that's free on Google Play, I don't know about anyone here but I myself am new to the Sony Z Ultra and my biggest issue I had thus far was with a custom recovery. If you are on a locked bootloader head over to @[NUT] DualRecovery thread in "Android Development" its on the first page. If your Sony Z Ultra is bootloader unlocked this will work for you. This also requires that the ROM you are on has a kernel that supports this method. Most custom AOSP ROMs for us have this feature built in to the kernel. The app is called Rashr, you MUST already have root access and a form of Superuser or SuperSU installed and working as it will ask for root upon launching the app...

I lost recovery a few times and I was stumbling around in learning best methods to go about things with the ZU and this did the trick and you DO NOT need a PC!!!!!

Launch the app permit root and this will give you the option to flash a recovery from the device storage, you can also download a recovery of your choice whether it be ClockworkMod, Philz, or Team Win. It confirms the device model in our case "Togari" and will flash the recovery and confirm its flashed within the app and give you the option to reboot to recovery when done.. If you have concerns you can actually backup your existing recovery and also existing kernel and you can have multiple backups not just one of each.. You can also rename them as you see fit and they are saved as image files. Example being recovery-from-20150129.img or kernel-from-20150129.img etc etc...

This may be redundant or it may not, I posted this here because I've seen some people like myself posting there issues with lost recoveries and there has been random replies and some of which were vague.. Also this is the Q&A and "Help" section and I'm just trying to offer some help!

If I've helped in any way please hit the thanks button, and make sure if this works for you to leave the developer a nice comment and 5 stars for the rating..

***DISCLAIMER***
I'm in no way affiliated with the developer of the app I just loved it so much it is legit a lifesaver!!! Also always make a nandroid backup when possible, and allways know what you are doing when tinkering with your device. Nobody is responsible for your device but you!

Get the app for free on Google Play - it can flash over 90% of Android devices - it also has over 3500 recoveries in its collection!!

Thanks to DsLNeXuS for a sick app

M7 (originally m7att) can't flash newer recoveries topic

Been working on this for a few days but I am running out of ideas. I originally consulted @nkk71 privately about this but we've been unable to find anything to resolve the issue. Hopefully, someone has experienced this before or has a fix, if this is not a hardware issue.

I have a m7att that appears to be unable to flash newer recoveries. It only seems to accept certain old versions and I haven't been able to exactly pinpoint why, this is my last resort before trying to go through the trouble in reviewing github commits for the recovery updates. Before you say "fastboot erase cache"; yes, I've done that hundreds of times (literally).

I can run adb commands in certain recoveries even when they are frozen on "Entering recovery..." screen. See the table I posted below under the adb? column for more info on which.

symptoms
- Can't flash certain recoveries (see list, especially newer ones)
- fastboot commands sometimes/very seldom lag or don't carry through (or I'm just impatient to wait and I just rebooted the bootloader)
- fastboot sometimes shows hbootpreupdate: 11 randomly while parsing commands (e.g. on fastboot getvar all)

status of the m7
- S-off, rooted
- fastboot getvar all info

Code:

fastboot getvar all
(bootloader) version: 0.5
(bootloader) version-bootloader: 1.60.0000
(bootloader) version-baseband: 4T.33.3218.15

all: Done!
finished. total time: 0.132s

- emmc chip info:

Here's a list of the result of all the recoveries I've tried so far on the L firmware (7.15.401.1)

What I've tried:
- Pastebin of typical process, this one was with 7.15 firmware. http://pastebin.com/wwM2GYdR
- Various FW, 1.29.401.12 up to 6.09.401.5 official firmware (current ROM)
- RUU'ed with 1.26.502.10, (was originally on 1.26.502.05 at bone stock)
- Flashed a stock firmware/recovery (1.26.502.10 , 6.09.401.5, 7.15.401.1) and then tried custom recovery right after
- @nkk71 & @cschmitt misc partition corruption guide.

Attached in this post is the original mmcblk0p19 (rename the file) from this mainboard.

[Recovery][FOTA]CWM and TWRP recoveries for custom ROMs topic

Tired waiting for someone to repack kernel with your favorite version of recovery? Or tired to run recovery script every time you update your ROM or kernel? Now you don't need any repacked kernels or recovery-scripts. Use your FOTAKernel as recovery partition!

It works on any kernel with extract_elf_ramdisk utility (it's built in mostly all kernels for custom ROMs, but I am not sure) by @Dees_Troy. And don't forget, that you are doing on your own risk, I am not responsible for bricked devices, acid rains or thermonuclear war.

Installation:

Download zip and flash it via your current recovery. If your current recovery is unusable, you can flash it via terminal emulator:
- Extract FOTAKernel.img and place it to the root of your external SD-card
- Type su and grant root access
- Type

Code:

dd if=/ext_card/FOTAKernel.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p23

- Reboot to recovery to test if it works (if not, try again and check if you are doing it correctly).

Some info:

Sony Xperia devices don't have recovery partition. Instead of this in custom kernels is used recovery-in-boot conception with two-stage boot (ramdisk-recovery is packed inside main ramdisk). And there is partition called FOTAKernel that is used for installing official FOTA (firmware-over-the-air) updates. After unlocking your bootloader it partition becomes redundant, because you cannot use OTA function anymore. So it may be used for storing recovery ramdisk. And this very useful future was implemented by recognized developer @Dees_Troy (lead TWRP developer), he developed utility extract_elf_ramdisk (it is merged to almost all kernels for Sony devices), it extracts recovery ramdisk from FOTA partition instead of using regular one from boot image. So even after updating or changing your kernel or ROM you don't lose your current recovery! Here is some info from Dees_Troy.

BTW, I don't own any of this work, I just adapted recovery images for using them from FOTA partition. And recoveries are not compiled by me.
